Melbourne crowned as world’s second-best city
Coming in just behind the ubiquitous New York City, Melbourne has been ranked by Time Out as the world’s second-best city to live in.
The Time Out Index is based on a survey of 34,000 people in 48 major cities around the world, and includes input from city experts and Time Out staff. The main topics of the survey are food and drink, culture, nightlife, convenience, affordability, community life, and overall happiness with the city.
Melburnians are spoilt when it comes to food, with 82% voting the city ‘amazing’ for food. Brunch remains a firm favourite, with Melburnians brunching at least once every fortnight, on average.
76% of Melbourne locals rated it ‘amazing’ for culture, and a whopping 84% of Melburnians reported ‘feeling happiness’ in the past 24 hours.
Art and culture abound in Melbourne, so it’s no surprise it has been voted second globally for the most creative city. Just look at the murals down ever-popular Hosier Lane, or visit one of the many art galleries and creative spaces that dot the city.
Melbourne has also been rated number one globally for live music venues, boasting 553 venues that host live music performances. This means the city has more live music venues per resident than any other city in the world, New York included. The live music bug seems to be on the rise, with 55% of Melbourne’s live music venues reporting increased audiences over the last couple of years.
This great, well-rounded combination of food, music, and art and culture cements Melbourne firmly into second place, and makes it a wonderful place to live, work, or visit!
