Strict Australian citizenship amendments unlikely to take effect

  • By Expat
  • October 16, 2017

The strict new Australian citizenship reforms announced last April are now looking very unlikely to pass in the Australian Senate. The bill, which must be voted on by the 18th of October, lacks support in the Senate. If the bill does not pass this vote, it will be scrapped unless an amended bill is tabled by the Australian Government.

If the bill is scrapped, Australian citizenship applications that were suspended after the April announcements will resume processing against the already existing application criteria. This means foreign employees wishing to apply for Australian citizenship will not be subject to tougher residency requirements, English language testing, and increased assessments of integration and commitment to Australian society and Australian values.
